Before moving to Australia, Cassandra grew up in rural New Zealand (where much of her formal art training was by correspondence) and travelled the world for a few years. Her Kiwi heritage and interconnectedness with the landscape influence her style of art. Her tutors have encouraged experimentation with various mediums and as a result, Cassandra has continued to adapt her style to incorporate new techniques and subjects from her global travels, time living in Europe and Vietnam, as well as her military experiences.
Cassandra likes to use a variety of mediums, but prefers oil painting and pen and ink predominantly.
Her work reflects her life experiences and personal narratives. As a full time Army Officer, she uses art as a means to relax during operational deployments and fits it in around high tempo roles, travel, and tertiary studies.
Cassandra considers art to be an alternative communication method. “It creates a stillness, a mindfulness, and there is no judgement surrounding whatever marks you want to make on the paper – it’s your own journey. You also control the process and decide the outcome, which is often in contrast to our military work where we are frustrated by a lack of control over situations or decisions that impact our lives”.
